Gannenmono (2018)
Gannenmono is a tapestry that celebrates the 150th year since the very first group of Japanese people called “gannenmono” immigrated to Hawaii. The word Gannenmono stands for gannen (the first year) of the Meiji period which is 1868 and mono (=people). The overall design of the tapestry is based on a traditional Hawaiian quilt, but I used dye on fabric to add the taste of traditional Japanese tapestry.
